Dubai is known for architecture that refuses to disappear into the background, and Atlantis The Royal might be one of its boldest examples.
Standing on the outer crescent of Palm Jumeirah, the resort looks less like a traditional hotel tower and more like a collection of enormous blocks stacked high above the waterfront.
Terraces, pools and open spaces appear between the different sections, while a dramatic skybridge connects the two sides near the top.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), Atlantis The Royal takes a very different approach from the conventional glass skyscrapers found across Dubai.
Instead of creating one continuous tower, the enormous structure is broken into individual blocks. These are stacked and shifted across the façade, leaving large openings between them known as sky courts.
This gives the building an unusual sense of depth.
Some sections appear solid and monumental, while others open completely towards the sea and skyline. Gardens, terraces and pools occupy spaces that would normally be enclosed inside a tower.
The stepped shape rises from both sides before meeting at the skybridge, creating the building’s most recognizable silhouette.
From a distance, it almost looks like an enormous architectural sculpture built from blocks.
Its location makes the architecture even more dramatic.
Atlantis The Royal sits on the outer edge of Palm Jumeirah, with the Arabian Gulf on one side and the Palm with Dubai’s skyline on the other.
Instead of simply placing balconies along the façade, the stepped design creates layers of outdoor spaces facing these views. Private pools appear high above the ground, while landscaped terraces bring greenery into different levels of the building.
Water becomes almost as important visually as the architecture itself.
Pools appear across terraces and balconies, while the long waterfront and surrounding Gulf create another layer beneath the building.
This combination of concrete, glass, greenery and water gives the enormous structure a surprisingly open character.
Atlantis The Royal is certainly not architecture designed to blend into its surroundings.
It is bold, oversized and unmistakably Dubai.
But instead of relying only on height, its identity comes from the spaces carved between its enormous stacked forms.
Those openings turn what could have been a single massive tower into something much more layered — a vertical resort filled with terraces, gardens, pools and views.
And that is what makes the building difficult to forget.
