The cliff doesn’t stop at the edge of the building. At Jumeirah Port Soller, it runs straight through it.
Set above Port de Sóller on Mallorca’s northwest coast, this hotel doesn’t sit on the cliff — it follows it. The structure steps down the rock face in terraced layers, matching the natural gradient of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. From the bay below, the building almost disappears into the stone.
That’s the point.
Built Into the Cliff
The architects at Arditecnica designed the hotel as a series of low-rise terraces cascading down the mountain’s slope. Each level steps lower toward the sea. The facades are clad in natural stone — earthy browns and warm cream, pulled from the same palette as the surrounding Tramuntana rock.
The round entry hall is modelled on the ancient Mallorcan defence towers that once guarded the coastline. It’s an architectural reference that reads before you even check in.
This is a LEED Gold certified building. The integration with the landscape isn’t just aesthetic — it’s structural.
Moorish Influence Above Port Soller Bay
The interiors carry a quieter reference. Arched openings, warm natural materials — wood, leather, local stone — and a muted palette that shifts between earth tones and deep blue. Interior designer Peter Silling drew from Mallorcan and Moorish traditions without overstatement.
Each room faces outward. Expansive glass frames the bay, the mountains, or both. The outside is always present. Light moves through the rooms as the day changes — the architecture is designed to catch it.
Works by local artists sit alongside handcrafted ceramics. Nothing is decorative for its own sake.
The View as Architecture
The infinity pool is built on a ledge. It doesn’t overlook the bay — it extends toward it, the water edge dissolving into the horizon line. The pool isn’t an amenity here. It’s a spatial decision.
The terraces work the same way. Each level frames a slightly different angle of the port below. Sit at the Sunset Lounge at the right hour and the mountains behind you block the light in a way that turns the whole bay amber.
These aren’t incidental views. The sightlines were drawn this way.
Before You Book
- Location: Port de Sóller, northwest Mallorca, Spain. The hotel sits above the port, accessible by road or via the iconic vintage tram that connects Port de Sóller to Sóller town.
- Best season: May–June and September–October. Fewer crowds, softer light, sea still warm enough to swim.
- Access: Palma de Mallorca Airport is approximately 45 minutes by car. The mountain road through the Tramuntana pass is part of the experience.
- Good to know: The hotel is set on a cliff — most of the property is terraced across multiple levels. The elevation is worth it, but factor in the steps if mobility matters.
