Built Above the Red Sea
Shebara Resort sits in Umluj, on Saudi Arabia’s northwest coast, where the Red Sea is still relatively untouched. The property is built on and over the water — 73 overwater bungalows extending out from the shore, each with a private pool and direct sea access below.
The architecture here doesn’t compete with the setting. It gives in to it.
What the Architecture Does
Each bungalow is placed to keep the horizon uninterrupted. The structure lifts you off land completely — the floor, the deck, the sound of water underneath. It’s one of those rare hotels where the building itself changes how you feel about where you are.
The interiors are set up to keep the focus outward: 65-inch smart TVs you won’t use, separate sitting areas, private pools you’ll actually use. Light moves across the space differently when there’s water beneath you.
Three restaurants overlook the Red Sea. Two pools. A full spa. But none of that is why you come here.
The Setting: Umluj and the Red Sea
Umluj is sometimes called the Maldives of Saudi Arabia — that comparison undersells it. The water is clear, the reef is intact, and it sits far enough from the major cities to still feel like a discovery. Shebara is one of the first international-calibre properties to anchor itself here.
Water sports are available on-site. The concierge arranges helicopter tours for guests who want to see the reef from above — which, architecturally, is worth it.
